Improved formula of BronCleer with Codeine Cough syrup expected to reduce misuse

Adcock Ingram has responded positively in the face of continuing reports of misuse and abuse of their cough syrup BronCleer with Codeine, by launching an improved formula, the company announced today.

Ongoing reports of the abuse of the product, very often combined with other substances, has caused great concern to the company and stakeholders alike.

“We are committed to supporting the responsible use of the medicines that we manufacture,” said Werner van Rensburg, Managing Director of the Over the Counter (OTC) Division of Adcock Ingram.  “The diversion of the product has been beyond our control, so it needed an approach to reduce the attractiveness of BronCleer with Codeine to potential abusers.”

The response has been an improved formulation of BronCleer with Codeine, which is immediately available in the market.  Alcohol is a common solvent used in cough mixtures to dissolve the active ingredients.  The key change to the formula of this product is that it now contains only 0.5% alcohol, the alcohol serving as the solvent for the active ingredients.

“As a result of the improved formula, there is a change in the taste of BronCleer with Codeine.  But as all the active ingredients in the product remain the same, consumers can be assured that there is no change in the efficacy,” concluded van Rensburg.

Healthcare Professionals, who play a very important role in managing the responsible use of medicines, are being advised of the improvement in formulation of BronCleer with Codeine.
